Trains – Travel Between Cities

Hungary has an extensive railway network that connects almost every part of the country. The national railway company MÁV-START operates most of the train services. You can travel between major cities like Budapest, Debrecen, Pécs, Szeged, Miskolc, and Győr easily. Trains are an excellent option for weekend travel, short trips, or visiting nearby countries like Austria, Slovakia, and Romania.  The trains are comfortable and on time, and students can enjoy special discounts. If you are under 26 or have a valid student ID, you can get up to 50% off train tickets on most routes within Hungary.

Types of trains:

  • InterCity (IC): Fast, comfortable, and ideal for long-distance trips.
  • Regional trains: Slower, more affordable, and suitable for short journeys.

You can buy train tickets at the station, through ticket machines, or online through the MÁV app or website.

Metro, Trams, and Buses – For City Travel

Public transport in Hungarian cities is reliable, frequent, and cheap. Budapest, the capital, has the most developed network. You can travel around the city using the Metro, Trams, and Buses.

Metro

Budapest has 4 metro lines, each marked with a different color (M1, M2, M3, M4). They run every few minutes and connect most significant areas of the city, including train stations and the city center.

Trams

Trams are one of the easiest and most scenic ways to travel, especially in Budapest. Tram number 2 is popular for its beautiful route along the Danube River. Trams also run in cities like Szeged, Debrecen, and Miskolc.

Buses and Trolleybuses

Buses cover areas not reached by metro or tram. In some cities, you will also find trolleybuses (electric buses). These are common and run frequently.

Tickets and Passes

You can buy single tickets from machines, kiosks, or through mobile apps like BKK FUTÁR. If you’re staying in Hungary for a while, it’s better to get a monthly student pass, which is much cheaper than buying tickets every day.

Average transport costs:

  • One-way local transport ticket: 350 – 450 HUF
  • Monthly student pass (Budapest): 3,450 HUF
  • Metro/bus/tram ticket fines (if caught without one): up to 8,000 HUF

Always carry your student ID and a valid pass with you while travelling!

Taxis and Ride-sharing

Taxis are available everywhere, but not all of them use meters or fair pricing. It’s safest to use a taxi app like:

  • Bolt
  • Főtaxi
  • City Taxi

These apps show the fare before the ride begins, and drivers follow the route shown on the app. Taxis start at about 1,000 HUF, and the cost increases based on time and distance.

Some Tips for Students

  • Always carry your student ID for discounts.
  • Use apps like BKK FUTÁR, Google Maps, and Waze for directions and schedules.
  • Use monthly passes to save money.
