Can International Students Get Permanent Residency?

Yes! International students can apply for permanent residency after living in Hungary for at least three years on a valid residence permit. However, non-EU students must obtain a temporary residence permit before transitioning to PR.

Required Documents for PR Application

To apply for permanent residency, you’ll need to prepare the following documents:

  • Valid passport

  • Proof of continuous residence (minimum 3 years)

  • Residence permit (temporary)

  • Health insurance

  • Proof of financial stability (bank statements, employment contract)

  • Accommodation proof (rental agreement or property ownership)

  • Criminal record certificate

  • Motivation letter (highlighting your contributions to Hungary)

Step-by-step Process to Get a PR

  • Complete residency requirements: Ensure you have lived in Hungary continuously for 3 years.

  • Gather required documents: Prepare all necessary paperwork.

  • Submit an online application: Apply via the Hungarian Migration Service’s Enter Hungary portal.

  • Biometric submission: Visit the migration office for fingerprinting.

  • Wait for approval:  The process usually takes 3-4 months.

  • Receive your PR card: Once approved, your PR status is valid for life, but the card must be renewed every 5 years.

After eight years, PR holders can apply for a Hungarian passport after 11 years. You can't leave the country for more than 45 days per year during this entire period. Also, you will have to take a Hungarian Language Test and a Hungarian History Test.
