Work After Graduation

For overseas students who have effectively finished a program of study in Canada, post-graduation work permits (PGWPs) are now invaluable open employment permits.  These licenses allow holders to work for any company, enabling flexible scheduling and the possibility of working anywhere throughout Canada.

Usually valid for eight months to three years, Post-Graduation Work Permits (PGWPs) provide an excellent chance for significant job experience in Canada. Several elements affect the length and degree of your study program, including the expiration date of your identity document, which determines the duration of the PGWP, either first or second. Getting labor experience here can provide candidates aiming for permanent residency with several opportunities, improving their future chances.

Eligible for a PGWP

1. A foreign citizen must have been at least 18 years old and have learned continuously in Canada within a program of at least 8 months to qualify for a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP). The study program has to be finished at a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) in one of the following programs below. A foreign national also has to apply for employment within 180 days following the completion of their study program.

2. An applicant from within Canada must have a valid authority at the time of application.  Imagine their study permission has run out or will expire. In such a situation, they could apply for the PGWP first and then seek guest status. However, those who submit applications for a PGWP before their study permit can start working full-time immediately while the paperwork is under review. Candidates might seek PGWP coverage from abroad.

3. Unlike most Canadian work permits, the PGWP does not require a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA).

4. A positive labor market impact assessment (LMIA) means a Canadian company might have to get one before hiring a foreign worker. Sometimes, people refer to this paper as a letter of confirmation.

5. If an employer requires an LMIA, they must apply for it. The current foreign worker can seek a work permit after their company has obtained the LMIA.

The employee applying for an employment permit has to present the following records:

  • a job offer letter
  • a contract
  • a copy of the LMIA, and
  • The LMIA number
