The Biometrics Collection Process
After submitting the study permit application online and paying the required fees, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) issues a Biometrics Instruction Letter (BIL) through the applicant's online account. This letter typically arrives within 24 hours of application submission and contains critical information, including instructions for scheduling an appointment and a completion deadline. Applicants generally have 30 days from the letter's date to provide their biometrics at an authorized location.
The biometrics fee costs CAD 85 for individual applicants, with a maximum family fee of CAD 170 when multiple family members apply together. This payment must be completed at the time of application submission to trigger the BIL issuance.
Scheduling the Appointment
Once the BIL is received, applicants must book an appointment at an authorized biometrics collection service point. The type of collection center depends on the applicant's location:
Visa Application Centres (VACs): Operating in over 108 countries worldwide, VACs serve as the primary collection points for applicants outside Canada. Appointments can be booked through official VFS Global or authorized service provider websites.
Application Support Centers (ASCs): Applicants in the United States can use any of the 133 ASCs authorized to collect biometric data for Canadian visa applications.
Service Canada Offices: For applicants already in Canada, designated Service Canada offices provide biometrics services through the eServiceCanada Appointment Booking Tool.
Early appointment scheduling is crucial, as slots fill quickly during peak application periods. Completing biometrics promptly ensures processing begins without unnecessary delays.
