Program Overview

The Computer Science (IT) Master's program at Aalborg University is a 2-year, full-time, English-taught program designed for both Danish and international students interested in programming, software engineering, machine intelligence, data management, and embedded systems. The "IT" stands for "International Track," distinguishing it from the Danish-taught Computer Science program.

The program aims to deepen students' skills in advanced areas of computer science and IT, offering specializations in Information Technology (IT) or Computer Science (CS) starting from the second semester. The curriculum includes core courses, electives, and project work using a problem-based learning (PBL) model, where students engage in group projects related to real-world problems to build both theoretical knowledge and practical expertise.

Students gain comprehensive knowledge in programming paradigms, machine learning, software innovation, agile software engineering, database technology, distributed systems, human-computer interaction, and verification techniques. The final semester is devoted entirely to a master’s thesis project.

Admission requires a relevant bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related fields, with proof of English proficiency. The program prepares graduates for diverse roles such as system developers, IT architects, project managers, system administrators, and consultants across various sectors including IT, mobile communications, space aeronautics, and health technology.

This program offers a strong foundation for careers in research and industry by combining rigorous academics with extensive project experience in an international environment.

Course Structure

  • First Semester: All students engage in project work combined with mandatory courses. Non-AAU bachelor students also undergo training in the PBL method if they have not previously been exposed to it.
  • Second Semester: Students select their track (IT or CS) and work on a project relating to their field. Courses aligned with the chosen track deepen their knowledge.
  • Third Semester: Students focus on specialization with a project that involves communicating a topical research problem in computer science. Specialization courses include Human-Computer Interaction, Database Technology, Distributed Systems, Semantics and Verification, Machine Intelligence, Programming Technology, and System Development. Students must take one mandatory course and select from multiple electives within their specialization.
  • Fourth Semester: Entirely dedicated to the Master's thesis project, with no additional courses.

This structure allows students to gradually specialize while maintaining a balance between theoretical coursework and applied project experience.

Courses and projects combine to equip students with skills applicable to diverse IT sectors and research roles.
