Structure of the Dutch Education System
Education in the Netherlands is divided into several key stages:
- Primary Education (Basisonderwijs): Begins at age 4 and lasts for 8 years. It focuses on foundational skills in language, mathematics, social studies, and creativity. The final year includes a national test that helps guide students toward appropriate secondary education tracks.
- Secondary Education (Voortgezet Onderwijs): Starts at age 12 and is split into three main streams:
- VMBO (Pre-vocational): 4 years, leading to vocational training.
- HAVO (Senior general secondary): 5 years, prepares students for universities of applied sciences.
- VWO (Pre-university): 6 years, leads to research universities.
This tiered system allows students to follow educational paths that match their strengths and career goals.
