Part-Time Jobs for International Students in Malaysia
International students who are studying full-time at a recognized university or college are allowed to work part-time for up to 20 hours per week during semester breaks or holidays that are more than 7 days long.
Common Part-Time Jobs:
- Restaurant staff (waiters, cashiers, kitchen helpers)
- Hotel assistants
- Retail shop assistants
- Call center or customer service roles
- Tutors for language or subject coaching
These jobs help students earn extra money, gain work experience, and improve their communication skills. However, students cannot work as cashiers in supermarkets, singers or dancers in clubs, or in any job considered morally inappropriate.
To work part-time legally, your university must approve your application and you must apply through the Immigration Department of Malaysia.
Internships During Studies
Many degree programs in Malaysia offer internship opportunities as part of the curriculum. These internships are usually unpaid or partially paid but are a great way to gain experience in your field, learn how companies work, and build a professional network.
Fields like engineering, IT, business, marketing, tourism, and hospitality often offer internships to international students. Performing well in an internship can sometimes lead to a job offer after graduation.
