About Scholarship:

The Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation Scholarship is one of Canada’s most prestigious awards for doctoral students. It supports individuals who are likely to become leading figures in their fields and are committed to addressing pressing public policy challenges. Scholars receive funding for up to three years, leadership training, mentorship, and opportunities to engage with a network of leaders across sectors.

 

Key Dates:

The deadline for Canadian institutions to submit online applications on behalf of candidates is 11:59 p.m. EDT, March 18, 2025.

Selected candidates may arrive as early as August 1, 2025, for the fall semester and no later than February 1, 2026, for the winter/spring semester. Failure to arrive during this time may result in the cancellation of the scholarship.
 

Selected candidates may use scholarship funds towards:

✔ visa or study/work permit fees
✔ airfare via the most direct and economical route
✔ health insurance
✔ living expenses, such as accommodation, utilities, and food
✔ ground transportation, including a public transportation pass
✔ books and supplies required for their study or research, excluding computers and other equipment

Canadian institutions are eligible to receive:

✔ $500 per scholarship recipient to aid with administrative costs once the student arrives in Canada
✔ reimbursement of additional employer compliance fees paid to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada in some cases
 

Citizenship:
Open to Canadian citizens, permanent residents of Canada, and international students enrolled in a Canadian PhD program.
Academic Standing:
Applicants must be nominated by their university and complete no more than 24 months of their PhD program by the application deadline.
Field of Study:
Research must be in the social sciences or humanities, focusing on issues of public importance.
Leadership Potential:
Demonstrated leadership skills and a commitment to engaging in public dialogue and contributing to societal well-being.
Language Proficiency:
Fluency in either English or French is required, with a working knowledge of the other official language being an asset.
Nominations:
Candidates must be nominated by their university, and each institution has its internal selection process before forwarding nominations to the Foundation.
