Program Overview

Many of today’s challenges—such as climate change, artificial intelligence, and rapid technological change—are closely linked to science and how it is understood by the public. In a time shaped by social media and fast-moving information, there is a growing need for clear and responsible science communication.

The Master of Science in Society explores how science connects with everyday life, policy, and culture. This cross-disciplinary programme looks at the role of science within society, including its relationship with mātauranga Māori and other knowledge systems, while also focusing on how scientific ideas are shared and understood.

The degree combines coursework with research and a final project, giving you both academic knowledge and practical experience. It prepares you for careers in science communication, public policy, science management, public engagement, NGO advocacy, and community development, while also providing a pathway into further research on the social impact of science.

Course Structure

The Master of Science in Society is a 180-point programme that can be completed in one year full-time or up to three years part-time. It combines coursework and project-based learning across different disciplines such as environmental studies, psychology, and Māori studies.

The programme is divided into two parts. Part 1 focuses on core courses that build skills in critical thinking, communication, and understanding the relationship between science and society. Part 2 is more practical, where students complete a science communication project, research essay, and either a work placement or research-based work.

Throughout the programme, students work under expert supervision and take part in seminars, gaining both academic knowledge and real-world experience in science communication and interdisciplinary research.
