Master’s
The Master of Applied Social Work at Massey University is designed for those who want to become a registered social worker in New Zealand but do not hold an undergraduate degree in social work. This programme is suitable for applicants with a relevant bachelor’s degree or practical experience in fields such as psychology, education, law, nursing, sociology, anthropology, or community services.
The course focuses on preparing you for professional social work practice, combining academic study with hands-on experience. A key part of the programme is supervised field education, where you will complete two placements arranged by the university. These placements provide at least 120 days of practical experience in real social service settings, helping you develop the skills needed for the profession. In some cases, one placement may be completed within your current workplace if you are already working in the sector.
This qualification meets the requirements for social worker registration in Aotearoa New Zealand, and may also support opportunities in other English-speaking countries, depending on local regulations.
For students interested in social work, community services, and social development, this degree offers a direct pathway into professional practice and registration.
